Custer Buckley
Custer Buckley was an English singer-songwriter and guitarist. Mostly a solo artist, he released albums from early '50s up into the late '80s. He is most known for his country rock style in the early '70s, his 1973 record Head To Toe being his biggest by far.
Outside of his own albums, however, he is best known for his brief time in the progressive rock group Fire Magnolia. Two albums released in 1969 and 1977 respectively would feature his iconic vocals and guitar. Although his time with the group was short, he became good friends with the members, particularly Jesse Kinsman. He had also made lesser-known contributions to two other bands: The Poppyseeds in the early '60s, and eventually the infamous Jynx throughout the '80s. Following the latter group's disbandment, however, Custer would go on a musical hiatus lasting almost eight years until his death from pancreatic cancer in 1995.
Personality:
Custer was loved by many for his sweet and patient demeanor. He never held grudges, put others before himself more often than not, and was generally described as a great man to work with. That being said, it was hard to get close to him. Although to some he seemed merely independent, to others he was withdrawn or even uncommunicative. It is true that he was rather secretive about his life and inner feelings. He also had a somewhat "all or nothing" attitude when it came to working with other musicians that muddled their perceptions of him. When he wasn't giving them full control, he was occasionally stubborn about the way he wanted things. Meanwhile, he was particularly concerned with praise, especially of his songwriting. Over the years, he developed an unhealthy obsession with his own public reputation according to some.
But controlling or not, he was always very soft-spoken. He notably struggled his entire life with putting his thoughts together while speaking, and it was to the point where he was notoriously bad at interviews. It's thought that these aspects of his personality drove him to become primarily a solo artist. It was where he could write the music on his own that he really shined.
